Thursday, February 13th 

Morning Arrival
Upon arrival at Havana International Airport (HAV): Clear immigration, customs and baggage, a process that takes about 30- 60 minutes. You will be greeted and escorted to your ground transportation to the hotel for check-in.

Welcome Lunch
We will join as a group at a locally owned restaurant in the neighborhood of Siboney.

Dinner and Musical Performance
Private musical performance in Vedado. The band leader is Professor Alberto Faya who has been working as a musician, professor and researcher within the Cuban musical world since 1973. He has won national awards in music and musicology. He will be joined by several young musicians who will treat us to a lively journey through the history of Cuban music.

Welcome dinner at the famous La Guarida restaurant. One of the best restaurants in Havana and famous not only for its delectable dining, but also as the location for the film Strawberry and Chocolate. It is housed on the third floor of a large, old town house carrying the charming ambience of the 1920’s.

Friday, February 14th

Morning
8:00am- 9:00am- “Introduction to the Cuban Legal System and Principles”. Cuban Attorney Ileana Saria provides a historical background of the Cuban legal system beginning with its colonial heritage and significant reforms to the Cuban Constitution from 1940 to today. The Cuban Civil Codes, Judiciary, Migration Law, and Foreign Investment Acts will also be introduced, highlighting a number of legal curiosities.

After our lecture, we’ll have a private performance with local performers Flamenco Spell.

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Cuba in Transition: The Rule of Law as Part of Cuban Reforms by Rafael Hernandez.

10:45 a.m. Depart for a Walking Tour of Havana Vieja. We start at Plaza De Armas, a scenic tree-lined plaza formerly at the center of influence in Cuba. It is surrounded by many of the most historic structures in Havana as well as important monuments. We continue to Plaza de la Catedral before visiting Plaza Vieja. Learn about the massive historic preservation program which began in this Plaza under the leadership of City Historian, Eusebio Leal.

Before lunch, we visit the Plaza de San Francisco, a cobbled plaza surrounded by buildings dating from the 18th century, dominated by the baroque Iglesia and Convento de San Francisco dating from 1719.

Afternoon
Group Lunch in Old Havana. After lunch, we take a leisurely stroll back towards Central Park via Obispo Street in Havana Vieja, before returning to Vedado. Rich in history and architecture, Calle Obispo is a narrow roadway with many of the locals offering their friendly greeting.

Evening
Group Dinner followed by a suggested visit next door to the Fabrica de Arte Cubano (FAC).

Saturday, February 15th

Morning
8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. The New Cuban Economy, Private Sector Regulation, and Socio-Economic Reform. A lecture by Juan Triana of the University of Havana. In his lecture, Mr. Triana will discuss Cuba’s recent economic reforms including the evolution of private property rights in Cuba, the relaxation of state intervention, and Cuba’s integration into the global economy.

9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. US-Cuba Relations: Legal and Diplomatic Perspectives. A presentation by former diplomat and University of Havana Professor, Camilo Garcia Lopez Trigo. Professor Trigo will address the most current status of the US-Cuba relations and give a new interpretation of the existing legal and political framework. There will be a highlight of the contradictions surrounding certain aspects related to Cuba, specifically the isolation and punishment of the Cuban state, the advancement of national interests, the nature of executive authority, and the Guantanamo Naval Base. Tough questions are encouraged for a free and open dialogue.

10:30am Ernest Hemingway Tour or Farm Visit/Las Terrazas

Evening
Free afternoon

Sunday, February 16th
Morning- 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Gender & Sex Equality in Cuba. A presentation by Alberto Roque, MD. This presentation will cover gender and sexual rights in Cuba with an emphasis on the heavily debated amendments to the Cuban Constitution, civil and family codes which have opened the door for same-sex marriage in Cuba.

Afternoon
Cuban Art & Art Studio Tour or “Under the Hood” Tour of Cuba’s Classic Cars

Evening
Farewell Dinner and Local Entertainment

Monday, February 17
Breakfast at the Hotel. After, airport transport will be provided for departure.
